Drone Strike in Romania Injures Multiple People
A drone struck an apartment building in Romania on Friday, causing an explosion and fire that injured several individuals, according to local officials. This incident happened while Russia was conducting a drone attack in Ukraine, close to the Romanian border.
Romania’s Ministry of Defense reported that the drone was tracked by radar systems before crashing onto the roof of a residential building in the Galați municipality. This event marked the first time a drone has hit a populated area in Romania, leading to injuries.
The state news agency stated that a woman and her child were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, while two other people were treated at the scene for panic attacks. In total, 70 residents were evacuated from the building as emergency services responded to contain the fire, which was brought under control shortly after.
Romania, a NATO member, has experienced more than two dozen incidents of Russian drones entering its airspace since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. Following this latest incident, Romania has called for enhanced anti-drone capabilities from NATO, deeming the drone’s flight path a serious breach of international law.
In response to the attack, the Romanian defense ministry deployed two F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter to monitor the situation and authorized the pilots to intercept any drones that posed a threat.
The event highlights ongoing tensions in the region, and Romanian officials continue to seek support for air defense systems as they navigate these threats.
