Sumit Antil Breaks His Own World Record at Indian Open Para Athletics Championships

Double Paralympic gold medalist Sumit Antil made headlines again by breaking his own world record in the F64 javelin throw. During the Indian Open Para Athletics International Championships held in Bengaluru on May 27, he achieved an impressive throw of 74.82 meters, surpassing his previous record of 73.29 meters set earlier this year.

This incredible feat adds to Antil’s already remarkable achievements, which include winning gold medals at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympics, along with several world championship titles.

After the event, a thrilled, yet tired, Antil reflected on reaching this milestone, stating, “I am really happy; I have been waiting for this moment for three years. It should have happened earlier, but it feels wonderful.”

He also expressed his hopes for future competitions, saying, “I could have done even better. I aim to improve at the upcoming Asian Para Games. This world record isn’t just mine; it belongs to the entire country.”

A Journey of Improvement

Antil shared insights on the hard work and technical changes he made in preparation for this record-breaking throw. “I worked on my technique and run-up to finally break the world record this year. Adjusting my rhythm and how I approach the throw has made a big difference. I could harness more power from my run-up compared to before. I will continue to work on this and aim to throw even further,” he explained.

His recent accomplishment solidifies Antil’s position as one of the leading para javelin throwers worldwide. Over the years, he has consistently raised standards in the F64 category, not only showcasing his immense talent but also his unwavering determination to improve, even as a champion.

This record wasn’t just a one-off moment but a result of gradual progress in his performance and techniques. Since he first stepped onto the international scene, Antil has continually pushed the limits in the F64 classification, blending refined technique with enhanced speed.

As he sets his sights on the upcoming Asian Para Games, Antil looks forward to building on this momentum and aims to further extend his remarkable achievements on the global stage.
