Manish Pandey: The Quiet Hero of Cricket

In the world of cricket, there are some players who don’t always make headlines, but they are invaluable when the stakes are high. Manish Pandey is one such player.

During an important match against the Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens on Wednesday night, Pandey showed why he still matters. He not only caught a crucial ball but also scored 45 runs on a tough pitch where runs were hard to come by.

A Longevity Like Few Others

Think about this: Manish Pandey has been part of all 19 seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Only three other legends—Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni—share that achievement. While these stars have taken the cricketing world by storm with their records and accolades, Pandey’s contributions have been quieter, but no less significant.

His international appearances are far fewer: just 29 ODIs and 39 T20Is. But instead of chasing headlines, he has consistently made a difference where it counts, day in and day out.

Still Going Strong at 36

At 36 years old, Pandey remains a vital member of the Kolkata Knight Riders team—his last full IPL season was in 2020. Yet, he continues to impress with his agility and commitment.

Before the batting began against Mumbai, he showcased his fielding skills with a brilliant catch—one that younger players might have struggled with. KKR assistant coach Shane Watson praised Pandey’s fitness, noting that he’s still one of the fittest players on the team despite his age.

Pandey has a simple explanation for his longevity in the game: hard work. He dedicates substantial time to fielding practice, regardless of weather conditions, believing that every little effort contributes to the team.

A Moment to Shine

As KKR chased 148 runs, the team faced tough challenges. They lost key players early on, and when it was finally Pandey’s turn to bat, he made the most of it. “I’ve been waiting to bat for four games. This one was special,” he said afterward, laughing.

What followed was a lesson in smart batting. Without hitting any sixes, he secured boundaries and ran quickly between the wickets, helping steady the team’s innings. His experienced play turned a shaky situation into a more manageable one, leading KKR closer to victory.

Watson, watching from the sidelines, commented on how well Pandey was playing. “He showed real skill today; it was clear that he has been putting in the practice,” he added, noting that this is some of the best cricket Pandey has played lately.

The Heart of KKR

With this win, KKR now stands at 13 points after an impressive turnaround from their initial struggles in the season. Pandey, who was crucial in their 2014 championship victory, remains a key player even in 2026. When asked about his continued presence on the team, Pandey smiled, suggesting that the history with KKR might be part of the reason.

However, it’s more than just nostalgia; it’s about how he continues to earn his place through skill and determination. His age doesn’t stop him from outperforming younger players, and he has shown time and again that he is the one to count on when the game is on the line.

Cricket has a way of recognizing those who remain persistent and dedicated, and on that night at Eden Gardens, it certainly did just that.
