New Fitness Challenge Aims to Get New Yorkers Moving
Fitness coach and social media influencer Mark Langowski, known as @bodybymark, invited everyone to join him for a pushup and plank competition in New York City this week. The event aimed to inspire people to get active and improve their fitness levels.
On May 12, at Washington Square Park, Langowski teamed up with Oikos yogurt for this lively gathering. With close to two million followers on Instagram, he encouraged participants to share their fitness experiences and routines. Winners of the competition, one male and one female, received cash prizes of $500 each for performing the most pushups and holding a plank the longest.
Langowski explained that the primary goal of the event was to motivate more people to engage in physical activity. “This is a way to promote strength and fitness across New York City and beyond,” he stated. Among the competitors, one participant impressively completed 111 pushups.
He mentioned that qualities such as strength, humility, and confidence make great competitors. “Those who performed best didn’t brag about their abilities, while some who claimed they could do high numbers didn’t achieve it,” he added. He highlighted that a touch of humility is an important aspect of competing well.
According to Langowski, pushups and planks are ideal exercises for measuring fitness levels. Other basic movements like pull-ups, squats, and endurance activities also play a crucial role. For people just starting out, he recommends beginning with modified pushups on their knees or against a wall. Gradually, they can work their way up to standard pushups.
“You’ll be surprised how much you can improve over time,” Langowski said. “Even if you can’t do a pushup yet, you can start somewhere and achieve great results.”
Along with practice, he emphasized the importance of rest and a healthy diet, which includes proper protein intake to support muscle growth. The key, according to him, is motivation. “I understand that starting can be tough, especially for those going through difficult times,” he said. “But getting out there is necessary.”
Langowski encouraged everyone to start with small steps, such as taking short walks. “You don’t need an expensive gym membership to get fit. Many people work out just in their living rooms,” he shared.
By teaming up with friends or a trainer for support, he believes more people can safely embark on their fitness journeys. “Just begin, and you’ll see the progress comes with time.”
