Chennai Super Kings Debut Spencer Johnson in IPL 2026 Match Against Lucknow Super Giants
In a thrilling IPL 2026 match on Friday, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) introduced Australian pacer Spencer Johnson to their lineup as they faced off against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow. Johnson stepped in for the injured Jamie Overton, and Gurjapneet Singh also made his return to the team. Notably, Akeal Hosein was left out of the playing XI.
This match marked Johnson’s return to competitive cricket after a spinal injury kept him sidelined during the T20 World Cup and Big Bash League. He last played in the IPL 2025 season.
At the toss, LSG captain Rishabh Pant chose to bowl first, citing the pitch’s “tacky” nature. He acknowledged that his team, out of playoff contention, was focusing on future planning and giving younger players a chance to shine.
“We are opting to bowl first as the wicket looks a bit tacky,” Pant shared. “With our playoff hopes dashed, it’s important to plan ahead and provide opportunities for our squad.”
The Lucknow team made some adjustments, with Akash Singh getting his first match of the season against his former team, and Abdul Samad and Mukul Choudhary also returning.
On the other hand, Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK’s captain, expressed confidence in batting first and mentioned that there seemed to be some moisture on the pitch. Currently, CSK stood fifth on the points table with six wins out of 11 matches, knowing that a victory could propel them into the top four.
LSG, sitting at the bottom of the standings with only three wins from 11 games, was motivated not only for pride but also to spoil CSK’s playoff ambitions.
Chennai Super Kings XI: Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Urvil Patel, Kartik Sharma, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Prashant Veer, Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmad, Spencer Johnson, Mukesh Choudhary.
Lucknow Super Giants XI: Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram, Rishabh Pant (wk/c), Mukul Choudhary, Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed, Mohammed Shami, Mayank Yadav, Akash Maharaj Singh, Prince Yadav.
As the game unfolds, all eyes are on both teams, with high stakes in play for CSK as they chase a spot in the playoffs.
