Exercise Boosts Brain Health Through Unique Mechanism, Study Finds
Researchers at Penn State have discovered a fascinating connection between exercise and brain health. Their study, published in Nature Neuroscience, reveals that physical activity might help the brain “cleanse” itself in a surprising way.
The researchers noticed that in mice, the brain is connected to the abdomen by a network of blood vessels similar to a hydraulic system. When mice move, especially when they use their abdominal muscles, blood flows from the abdomen into the spinal canal. This movement creates a slight pressure that causes the brain to shift gently within the skull.
Patrick Drew, the lead author of the study and a professor at Penn State, explained, “Every time the mice contract their abdominal muscles, blood moves and causes the brain to sway a bit.” This subtle movement occurs within a space filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which plays a crucial role in clearing out waste that can lead to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
Using advanced computer simulations, the researchers found that this movement helps push the CSF through brain tissues, taking away harmful waste. “Our research shows how movement could be a key reason why exercise supports a healthy brain,” Drew stated.
In tests, the researchers learned that even without exercise, applying gentle pressure to a mouse’s abdomen could shift the brain enough to trigger fluid flow. They were surprised by how strongly brain movement was linked to the contraction of abdominal muscles.
However, the researchers noted that these findings come from studies on mice, so more research is necessary to see if the same applies to humans. They also relied on simulations rather than directly measuring fluid movement in a living brain.
