BRICS Ministers Wrap Up New Delhi Talks Without Reaching Consensus

A recent two-day gathering of foreign ministers from BRICS nations wrapped up in New Delhi on Friday, but no joint statement was issued due to differing opinions among some member countries regarding the situation in the Middle East.

India, the host of the meeting, noted that ministers shared their national views and discussed various topics, including sovereignty, maritime security, and the importance of protecting civilian lives and infrastructure in the Middle East. However, there were some disagreements, particularly noted in a footnote mentioning that one member had concerns over sections related to Gaza and security in strategic waterways.

The BRICS group comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and extended members like Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. Tensions among members have been more apparent during the recent conflict involving Iran, especially between Iran and the UAE.

On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for BRICS nations to denounce the actions of the U.S. and Israel, which he labeled as unlawful aggression. He urged member states to stand against what he described as the politicization of international organizations.
