British Man Convicted of Attempted Murder of Woman and Child
A man of Indian descent living in Britain has been convicted for attempting to murder a woman and a child who were stabbed in Dagenham last year. Kulvinder Ram, 48, was found guilty after a four-week trial at the Old Bailey court.
The attack occurred in October 2024, and during the trial, Ram was also found guilty of causing serious injuries to another child. Detective Constable Lewis Whitlock, who led the investigation, expressed deep concern for the victims, saying, “This is a particularly distressing case. My thoughts remain with the victims as they work through the trauma of that day.”
Detective Whitlock believed there was no doubt Ram intended to kill, and he was pleased the jury agreed with the evidence presented. He also commended the quick actions of an off-duty officer, Special Police Sergeant Seff Serroukh, who encountered the victims running in the road covered in blood on his way home.
SPS Serroukh bravely intervened to restrain Ram, sensing the danger posed to others. “Without him, I believe Ram would have caused further harm, potentially fatal,” Detective Whitlock added. The officer was praised for his courage, and it was noted that the family of the victims expressed their gratitude to him.
During the trial, it was revealed that all three victims underwent surgery due to their severe injuries. One victim’s condition was so critical that medical staff feared for their life for several days.
SPS Serroukh initially thought he was witnessing a Halloween prank, but upon getting closer, he understood the seriousness of the situation. “I ran towards them and was immediately struck by how badly they were hurt. When I saw children involved, I knew I had to act fast,” he recounted.
Despite being alone and without safety equipment, he felt compelled to help. He successfully restrained Ram, keeping him on the ground until other officers arrived. “What mattered most was that the victims survived, and I’m just thankful I was there to help,” he said, reflecting on this challenging experience in his six-year police career.
The court also heard Ram was experiencing undiagnosed schizophrenia at the time of the attack. He had been feeling paranoid and believed he was being watched, which contributed to his erratic behavior leading up to the events. Just weeks before the attack, he had made threats against one of the victims.
Ram has been in custody since his arrest following the attack and awaits sentencing at the Old Bailey in the coming days.
