Pakistan Denies Reports of Iranian Aircraft Using Its Airfields Amid Tensions

Pakistan has dismissed claims that it allowed Iranian planes to land at its airfields, an accusation that suggested these moves were intended to protect the aircraft from possible U.S. strikes. This situation arises as Pakistan tries to position itself as a mediator between the U.S. and Iran.

On May 11, reports emerged that Tehran might have sent a civilian flight to Afghanistan related to the ongoing conflict. However, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized these allegations as “misleading and sensationalized.” They added that such stories could undermine efforts aimed at achieving regional stability.

The ministry clarified that during recent diplomatic talks, several planes from Iran and the U.S. arrived in Pakistan to assist with the transportation of diplomatic personnel and security teams. They noted that some of these aircraft stayed temporarily in Pakistan as further discussions were anticipated.

High-profile figures, including U.S. President Donald Trump, expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s mediation efforts. Trump informed reporters that he found the mediation to be effective, commending both the army chief and the prime minister of Pakistan for their contributions.

Pakistan’s involvement in easing tensions has grown, especially as it hosted key delegations for talks on April 11-12 following a temporary ceasefire agreement.

Despite a positive beginning in negotiations, discussions in Islamabad ultimately fell through. Nonetheless, leaders in Pakistan remain hopeful. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated he is optimistic that the current efforts will lead to a lasting peace agreement.

In another development, Trump initiated “Project Freedom,” designed to help navigate vessels through the sensitive Strait of Hormuz. However, this operation was quickly halted upon requests from Pakistan and other nations to avoid jeopardizing negotiations with Iran.

Senator Lindsey Graham voiced concerns that if allegations of Pakistan sheltering Iranian aircraft prove true, it would necessitate a thorough reevaluation of Pakistan’s role as a mediator in the complex U.S.-Iran dynamic.

As the situation unfolds, Pakistan continues to navigate its relationships with both Iran and the United States, striving for peace and stability in the region.
