Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Remarkable IPL Comeback: A New Perspective

As the 2026 IPL season progresses, Indian cricket fans find themselves buzzing about a familiar topic: comebacks. Historically, strong performances in the IPL lead to debates about player selection, and this year, the focus is on Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

What makes this situation unique is Bhuvneshwar’s calm demeanor amid rising expectations for his return to the Indian team. Currently leading the Purple Cap race, he’s delivering impressive performances, yet he remains unfazed by the hype.

“I’m not focusing on making a comeback to the Indian team. I’ve stopped setting long-term goals because they haven’t worked for me in the past,” Bhuvneshwar shared in a video. This perspective stands out in today’s cricket world, where many players are always planning their next opportunity.

At 36, Bhuvneshwar is enjoying his cricket without the pressure to prove himself. His bowling has regained its sharpness, showcasing skill and precision rather than raw speed. This IPL, he has racked up 21 wickets in just 11 matches and has been crucial for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their playoff chase.

His performance this season has caught the attention of cricket experts. Renowned figures like Ravichandran Ashwin have praised his abilities after standout performances, further fueling discussions about a potential return to the national squad. India has been in search of bowlers who can perform under pressure, making Bhuvneshwar’s skill set particularly appealing.

However, the selectors face a difficult decision. With India’s T20 plans extending to the 2028 Olympics, they need to consider Bhuvneshwar’s age and injury history, making them cautious about his selection. Despite this, Bhuvneshwar seems at peace with his journey, reflecting on past experiences and focusing on the present: “I’m grateful for the matches I’ve played and the wickets I’ve taken. There have been ups and downs, but it’s all part of my career.”

His approach mirrors that of Ashish Nehra, who made a successful return to international cricket in his late 30s. While the game has become tougher for seasoned fast bowlers, Bhuvneshwar’s experience and calmness make him a valuable asset.

Interestingly, Bhuvneshwar mentioned, “Since stepping back from international play, I now have ample breaks after the IPL, allowing me to recharge.” This time away from the intense international schedule seems to have rejuvenated him, allowing him to focus on his craft without pressure.

In conclusion, whether or not Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns to the Indian team will depend on many factors, but his current mindset reflects a refreshing peace. After years of carrying the weight of expectations, he is now enjoying cricket on his own terms, reminding everyone that sometimes stepping back can help you move forward more effortlessly.
