Passengers Quarantined After Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship

A passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship recently shared footage from his quarantine room at the National Quarantine Unit in Omaha, Nebraska. This follows a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise.

Jake Rosmarin, who is currently self-isolating, has been documenting his experience on social media, sharing videos from both the ship and the medical facility. Health officials are keeping a close eye on the passengers after possible exposure to the Andes virus, a type of hantavirus. They have assured the public that the risk remains low.

In one of his videos, Rosmarin showed his quarantine room, which was equipped with hand sanitizer, a thermometer, and even a stationary bike. “I can have stuff sent here to make me feel more at home,” he mentioned, indicating that he plans to order some comforts during his stay. He also expressed that he feels well and has not tested positive for the virus.

Health authorities have said that passengers might be able to leave the facility before the usual 42-day monitoring period if they are symptom-free and can safely isolate at home. They will also ensure that individuals maintain contact with local health departments and can seek medical help quickly if necessary.

Of the 18 people transported to the U.S. due to the outbreak, 16 are in Nebraska, while two are in Atlanta. Most are quarantined, but one is in a special biocontainment unit following an earlier test result.

Officials have stressed that the risk to the public is low, emphasizing that the Andes variant of hantavirus is not easily transmissible and typically requires prolonged, close contact with someone who is showing symptoms.
