Tensions Rise Within AIADMK as Leadership Disputes Emerge
Chennai – The AIADMK party is facing significant internal strife following claims made by a faction of MLAs, led by prominent figures SP Velumani and C Ve Shanmugam. They accuse party leader Edappadi K Palaniswami of attempting to partner with the rival DMK, a move that they believe would keep the TVK party from gaining power. This group of approximately 30 MLAs has publicly expressed their support for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s administration, which is preparing for a crucial vote on Wednesday.
The dissatisfaction among these MLAs stems from the AIADMK’s disappointing performance in the recent elections held on April 23, where only 47 out of 164 contested seats were won. In response to the dissenting voices, the party has dismissed allegations regarding any potential collaboration with the DMK as mere rumors.
Historical context looms over the current situation, as past splits in the AIADMK, particularly following the deaths of influential leaders like MGR in 1987 and J. Jayalalithaa in 2016, have created unease among party loyalists.
On Tuesday, Velumani and Shanmugam reiterated their endorsement of the TVK-led government. Shanmugam mentioned plans to meet with Vijay later that day to officially communicate their support. He accused Palaniswami of pursuing an agenda that aligns with the DMK, which contradicts the founding principles of AIADMK.
He emphasized the necessity for the party to revitalize itself and return to its roots, which he termed the “Amma rule,” advocating for rejuvenation under the current leadership. The MLAs have appointed Velumani as their floor leader to rally their cause.
In the midst of this upheaval, the AIADMK used social media to defend Palaniswami, stating that the dissenters are spreading falsehoods after failing to secure victories in their own constituencies. The party stressed that decisions regarding partnerships ought to be made collectively, and denied any authority to those challenging Palaniswami’s leadership.
The message concluded by reinforcing that the votes gathered during the elections were a testament to the AIADMK and its leadership, asserting unity among supporters and emphasizing the party’s foundational strength.
