Italian Open: Iga Swiatek narrowly avoids shock defeat to Caty McNally as French Open jitters loom

Swiatek Triumphs in Italian Open Opener

Iga Swiatek, although not at her best, secured a hard-fought victory against World No. 63 Caty McNally in the Round of 64 at the Italian Open. After a brief struggle in the second set, Swiatek’s experience shone through, allowing her to advance to the next round.

The match kicked off with Swiatek dominating, controlling the rallies from the baseline. With powerful topspin forehands, she quickly took the first set 6-1, breaking McNally’s serve multiple times and keeping the American off balance. McNally found it tough to adjust to Swiatek’s depth and consistency during lengthy rallies.

However, the second set proved to be a different story. McNally raised her game significantly, becoming more aggressive and taking risks by approaching the net. This change in strategy helped her win the set 7-6 in a tense tiebreak, giving her a momentary boost in momentum.

Yet, Swiatek showed resilience in the deciding set. She improved her first-serve accuracy and reduced her unforced errors, ultimately winning 6-3. Over the course of the match, she clinched 54% of the total points and converted six break points, further highlighting her ability to perform under pressure.

Despite McNally’s strong efforts, Swiatek’s consistency on clay proved crucial. She will now meet the winner of the upcoming match between Emma Navarro and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Swiatek’s Ongoing Battle for Form

Swiatek, a former World No. 1, has faced challenges this clay-court season, struggling to reclaim the level of play that once made her almost unbeatable. After inconsistent performances earlier in the year, she couldn’t build momentum during the European tour.

Her difficulties peaked at the Madrid Open, where she had to retire in her third-round match against Ann Li. After losing the first set 7-6(4) and winning the second 6-2, Swiatek was unable to continue while trailing 0-3 in the last set. She appeared upset, called for medical help, and left the court in tears.

With the French Open approaching, Swiatek is determined to find the form that helped her win three consecutive titles at Roland Garros.
