A new power dynamic centered on artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging in Washington. This situation involves some of the world’s richest companies, numerous lobbyists, and significant financial investment aimed at shaping the future rules for AI development, control, and profits.

In early 2026, AI startups such as OpenAI Inc. and Anthropic PBC significantly increased their federal lobbying efforts, spending millions and setting new records. Just the previous year, total lobbying expenditures related to AI reached an all-time high of $130 million, with major companies like Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet heavily investing in this area.
