ED Issues Lookout Notice for Kolkata DCP in Money Laundering Case
NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a lookout notice for Shantanu Sinha Biswas, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Special Branch in Kolkata. This notice aims to prevent him from leaving the country after he failed to respond to five summons related to a money laundering investigation.
Biswas previously served as the officer-in-charge at Kalighat Police Station, an area near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence. Last month, ED officials searched Biswas’s home; however, he was not present during the search.
The investigation ties back to a syndicate involved in illegal land transactions and extortion activities, allegedly led by a man named Biswajit Podder, also known as Sona Pappu. Podder has numerous criminal charges against him, including attempted murder.
According to sources, the lookout notice will allow authorities to detain Biswas at airports or seaports. He had previously missed ED summons, citing “official commitments.” Biswas’s lawyer had already represented him in this matter.
In a related development, Joy Kamdar, a Kolkata businessman, was arrested last month in this case. ED officials stated that they seized a Toyota Fortuner vehicle and a US-made revolver during a search of Poddar’s residence.
