Kohli Critiques Umpiring After Controversial Catch in GT vs RCB Showdown at IPL 2026

Virat Kohli showed his frustration after Rajat Patidar was controversially declared out during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL match against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on April 30.

In the eighth over of RCB’s innings, Patidar tried to pull a short ball from Arshad Khan. He didn’t hit it cleanly, and the ball went high into the air, where two Gujarat Titans fielders were waiting. Initially, it looked like Kagiso Rabada would take the catch, but Jason Holder ended up catching it.

However, quick replays raised questions about the legitimacy of the catch, as it appeared Holder might have touched the ground while making the catch. Despite this, the third umpire confirmed the catch after reviewing it, leading to Patidar’s dismissal. Kohli, who had already been out earlier in the match, was visibly upset and was seen animatedly discussing the decision with the on-field officials from the sidelines.

Before his dismissal, Kohli had given RCB a solid start during the powerplay, making Patidar’s controversial ousting one of the key moments of the match. This dismissal was particularly damaging for RCB, as Patidar is a vital player in the batting order. With Devdutt Padikkal steadying the innings, the tension in this important match increased.

### IPL Playing Conditions Overview

According to the IPL’s playing conditions, a catch is considered fair under specific circumstances, which include:

– A catch is valid only if the ball or any fielder touching the ball does not go beyond the boundary before the catch is completed.
– A catch is still fair if held in a fielder’s hands, even if their hand touches the ground.
– A catch remains valid if the ball is secured against the body or lodged in the fielder’s protective gear or clothing.
– If the ball has been hit multiple times by the batter but hasn’t touched the ground, the catch is still fair.
– Catches taken after the ball touches the wicket, an umpire, or another player are considered legal.
– A catch can be legal even if the ball crosses the boundary, as long as neither the fielder nor the ball has touched the ground outside the boundary before the catch.

This incident certainly added to the drama of the match in Ahmedabad.
