Local Leader Drives Job Creation Through Innovative Approaches

In today’s challenging economic landscape, Ajay Kela is at the forefront of a significant initiative aimed at creating jobs. As the President and CEO of the Wadhwani Foundation, Kela emphasizes action. He is dedicated to helping individuals find meaningful work that can support their families, moving beyond mere discussions on policy.

Kela’s personal journey mirrors a larger vision of giving back. Like the Foundation’s founder, Romesh Wadhwani, he built a successful career abroad before returning to leverage his skills for a larger mission. His goal: to create five million dignified jobs and equip 25 million people with skills for employment by 2030.

Under Kela’s leadership, the Foundation has expanded its reach, supporting startups through the Wadhwani Entrepreneur Network. It also prepares young people with job training programs, collaborates on research, and partners with governments for AI-driven transformations. The focus is on not only creating opportunities but ensuring access for those who need it most.

In a recent interview, Kela discussed the importance of generating significant impact, the role of technology in bridging opportunity gaps, and the long-term growth dependent on effective job creation.

Defining Dignified Jobs

When asked about what constitutes a “dignified family wage job,” Kela stated that it’s more than just income—it’s about dignity and the chance to build a future. Such jobs should be able to cover essential needs like housing, education, and healthcare. While the specific income varies across regions, the underlying goal remains constant: to help individuals move from mere survival to stability, and eventually, growth.

Kela believes that creating jobs is just one part of a larger system. He emphasizes collaboration across various sectors to ensure individuals have the skills necessary to fill those jobs, measuring success through real change in people’s lives.

Adapting to Change

Kela also shared insights on how Wadhwani Foundation keeps its training relevant in a fast-evolving job market. Rather than sticking to static curricula, they focus on developing adaptable systems. By using AI, they can continuously update training content, personalize learning experiences, and align their programs with current job market needs.

Personal Journey to Social Impact

Reflecting on his journey from corporate success to social impact, Kela credits his childhood experiences with shaping his perspective. Growing up in a small apartment, an opportunity for education in the U.S. changed the trajectory of his life and his family’s future. Observing the potential in those around him, he embraced the chance to create change at a broader level through the Wadhwani Foundation.

He recounted inspiring stories of people he had helped—a driver who, after gaining new skills, transformed his family’s prospects, and a cook who built a catering business that supports his family today.

Building a Lasting Legacy

Kela emphasized that the most meaningful legacy the Indian diaspora can create isn’t just through financial contributions but by building sustainable systems and institutions that will benefit future generations.

Leveraging AI for Development

While the Wadhwani Foundation embraces AI, Kela notes that technology alone isn’t the answer. AI must be integrated with human systems—educators, employers, and mentors—to make a true impact. They strive to create AI tools that are practical and inclusive, catering to the unique challenges in emerging markets.

A Message for Young Indians

Kela encourages young Indians seeking opportunities abroad to remember that India today is brimming with potential. With the right resources and mindset, they can find success without leaving their homeland. He urges them to grow where they can and contribute to their communities.

Integrated Approach to Development

The Wadhwani Foundation operates through four interconnected pillars: Entrepreneurship, Skilling, Innovation and Research, and Government Digital Transformation. Kela explains that these elements work together to form a complete ecosystem for creating jobs, where learning leads to earning and ultimately to entrepreneurship.

This holistic approach enables the Foundation to reach millions, making a substantial difference in the lives of individuals across India and beyond.
