Mumbai Indians Suffer Setback as Mitchell Santner Exits IPL 2026

The Mumbai Indians are facing a tough challenge as all-rounder Mitchell Santner has officially been ruled out of IPL 2026. He sustained a left shoulder injury during a match against the Chennai Super Kings on April 24 at Wankhede Stadium, and unfortunately, he won’t be able to return for the rest of the tournament.

The injury occurred while Santner made a diving catch in the 17th over to dismiss Kartik Sharma. After the catch, Santner was seen in discomfort, clutching his shoulder. Medical staff treated him in the dugout, where he received ice treatment and his arm was put in a sling.

During the second innings, Mumbai Indians opted for a substitution, bringing in Shardul Thakur as a concussion replacement, a move that stirred quite a debate among fans and analysts.

Currently, the Mumbai Indians are struggling in the league, sitting in ninth place with just four points after winning only two of their seven matches, resulting in a net run rate of -0.736.

Replacement Announcement

In response to Santner’s departure, the Mumbai Indians have signed South African spinner Keshav Maharaj as his replacement. Maharaj is a seasoned player known for his precision and efficiency, boasting a wealth of experience since debuting internationally in 2016.

Interestingly, Maharaj was included in South Africa’s squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup without any prior T20I experience. He made a memorable debut as captain against Sri Lanka, taking a wicket with his first delivery.

As an accomplished leader in both international and franchise cricket, Maharaj has achieved 31 wickets in his last 30 T20 matches, with impressive figures of 3 for 15. Recently, he was part of the South African women’s team support staff, contributing to their 4-1 T20I series victory over India.

As they look to improve their position in the rankings, the Mumbai Indians are gearing up to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 29 at Wankhede Stadium.
