GITAM University Selected for Quantum Technology Lab Initiative
Visakhapatnam: GITAM Deemed to be University has been chosen as one of 23 top institutions in India to set up a lab focused on teaching quantum technologies at the undergraduate level. This initiative is backed by the Union government’s Department of Science and Technology, which will provide ₹75 lakh, while GITAM will contribute ₹25 lakh.
Quantum technology is becoming increasingly important across various fields like computing, communication, and materials science. Countries around the world are eager to advance in this area, as those who excel in quantum technologies may influence the future of global tech.
The initiative is part of India’s National Quantum Mission, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, which aims to build the country’s capabilities in quantum technologies without relying on imports. This includes everything from fundamental research to manufacturing and developing a skilled workforce.
GITAM plans to establish a dedicated quantum teaching lab and introduce a minor in quantum computing for students in science and technology programs. This program will include practical learning experiences in areas like optics and quantum simulators. The university will also collaborate with expert faculty from institutions such as TIFR, IISc, and the IITs. An official from GITAM stated that this initiative will significantly enhance the capabilities of Visakhapatnam and the state, making it a pivotal player in the technological advancements of the next decade.
