Iyer’s Calm Leadership Guides Punjab Kings to Historic Run Chase

In a thrilling match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Shreyas Iyer led the Punjab Kings to an extraordinary victory, chasing down an imposing target of 265 runs against the Delhi Capitals. They completed the chase with six wickets remaining and seven balls to spare, marking one of the finest run chases in T20 history.

After the game, Iyer shared that the key message in the dressing room was straightforward: “score just one more run than the opposition.” This simple yet effective strategy shaped their approach throughout the innings, allowing them to overcome KL Rahul’s spectacular unbeaten 152, which was the highest score by an Indian in IPL history.

A Clear Message

Despite the tough target, Iyer mentioned that there was no sense of panic among the players. “All I thought was that we just need one more run to win,” he explained during the post-match presentation. Iyer was impressed by how well the bowlers were performing and felt confident they could match the Delhi Capitals’ performance.

Instead of complicating things, Iyer kept the focus on the task at hand. “I told myself, if they can do it, so can we,” he added, showcasing a calm and composed demeanor as a leader.

Staying True to Their Game Plan

Iyer pointed out that the team’s confidence stemmed from previous matches where they had successfully chased 220+ targets. The plan was to be aggressive right from the beginning. “We aimed to score as many runs as we could during the powerplay,” Iyer said.

That bold start came from openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, who wreaked havoc on the Delhi bowling attack, putting up a staggering 126 runs in just 6.5 overs. Their explosive start set a solid foundation for the rest of the team, with Iyer anchoring the innings with his own unbeaten 71 runs off 36 balls.

Looking Ahead

Though delighted with the batting performance, Iyer acknowledged that there were improvements needed, especially after a tough outing in the field. Focused on recovery and maintaining perspective, he said, “We want to take a breather and then get back to practice, preparing for our upcoming matches.”

Iyer’s approach is typical of his leadership style—clear-headed and unflappable amidst the excitement of the game. On a night filled with extraordinary performances, the Punjab captain kept things simple, guiding his team to a remarkable win.
