Mumbai Indians Struggle in IPL 2026, Hardik Pandya Under Pressure

The IPL 2026 season has not started well for Hardik Pandya and the Mumbai Indians. With only one win in their first five matches, the team, which has won the championship five times, is at risk of a disappointing season. Hardik, the captain, seems to be feeling the heat, showing signs of frustration and stress on the field.

After a seven-wicket loss to the Punjab Kings, Hardik openly criticized his team members, particularly singling out the batting performance. As pressure builds, speculation arises about whether stepping back from the captaincy could help him regain focus.

Calls for Rohit Sharma’s Return as Captain

Former cricketer Manoj Tiwary believes it’s time for Mumbai Indians to reinstate Rohit Sharma as captain. Rohit had led the team to five titles before being replaced by Hardik in 2023. Tiwary commented that Hardik has not met expectations and called Rohit’s removal unfortunate. He suggested that bringing Rohit back could stabilize the team.

“Hardik needs to take a break from captaincy, and Rohit should come back. It was unjust to remove him in the first place. Hardik’s performance hasn’t shown he can deliver a championship,” Tiwary said on Cricbuzz.

Hardik’s personal performance has also been underwhelming; in four matches, he has taken only two wickets with a high economy rate. His batting numbers are equally concerning, contributing just 81 runs at an average of 27.

Team Dynamics in Question

The situation seems to have affected Hardik’s relationship with teammates, especially with bowler Jasprit Bumrah. After the loss to Punjab, a video surfaced showing Bumrah appearing unhappy with Hardik’s fielding decisions. At a crucial moment, Hardik’s strategy didn’t sit well with Bumrah, leading to an exchange that showcased the tension between them.

Despite the challenging circumstances, there’s still hope for the Mumbai Indians. Historically, the team has had tough starts yet managed to bounce back. In 2014, they lost five consecutive matches but later reached the playoffs, and in 2015, they turned around a poor start to ultimately win the title.

This history offers a glimmer of hope as they prepare to face the Gujarat Titans on April 20 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both Hardik and the Mumbai Indians will aim to turn their season around as they seek inspiration from their past successes.
