Trump Labels Giorgia Meloni ‘Unacceptable’ Following Her Pushback on Pope Leo XIV Comments

Tensions Rise Between Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni

Tensions escalated on Tuesday between former President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after Trump openly criticized her for not backing U.S. efforts against Iran. In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Trump called Meloni’s stance “unacceptable” and expressed his shock at her lack of support.

This conflict intensified when Meloni criticized Trump’s recent comments about Pope Leo XIV, labeling them as “unacceptable.” Trump, in turn, dismissed her remarks, stating that she was the one who was “unacceptable.”

In his social media post, Trump attacked the Pope for his calls for a peaceful approach in the Middle East, describing him as “weak on crime” and urging him to focus on his role as Pope rather than engaging in politics. His comments became highly discussed online, accusing the Pope of compromising global safety by siding with the “radical left.”

During the interview, Trump also emphasized that Meloni wasn’t providing the support needed for critical global energy routes, saying, “They depend on Donald Trump to keep it open.” This marked a significant change in sentiment towards Meloni, who was previously praised by Trump as a “great leader” just weeks earlier.

The discord comes at a time when Meloni has been distancing herself from both Washington and Jerusalem amid increasing pressure from her constituents regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. On Tuesday, she announced Italy’s decision to halt the automatic renewal of a long-standing defense agreement with Israel. This decision signals a shift in Italy’s stance and follows rising tensions between Rome and Jerusalem.

Meloni stated, “In light of the current situation, we have decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel.” Experts view this move as a significant change, particularly amidst criticism of Israeli military actions by Italian officials.

In response to Italy’s decision, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the government, calling it an embarrassing failure and lamenting the loss of a strategic partnership.

As the United States navigates its complex relationship with Iran, Meloni’s actions reflect a broader political adjustment as Italy faces domestic challenges related to rising energy costs. Meanwhile, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s alliance with the United States, stressing that cooperation should be based on loyalty and respect.

The increasing tensions between Trump and Meloni highlight the growing challenges within Western alliances as leaders attempt to balance international relationships with domestic political pressures.
