BJP Candidate Faces Backlash Over Comments on Gandhi
JALPAIGURI: Naresh Roy, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate for Dhupguri, is under scrutiny following the circulation of a video in which he reportedly makes unflattering remarks about Mahatma Gandhi. This video, shared widely by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on social media, has sparked outrage among party leaders and supporters.
In the clip, Roy is heard referring to Mahatma Gandhi as a “deshdrohi,” which translates to “traitor.” TMC leaders, including Kunal Ghosh and Shashi Panja, have condemned these remarks, accusing the BJP of disrespecting both national and regional heroes. Ghosh pointed out that such statements are not surprising coming from a BJP candidate, implying that the party harbors sympathies for Nathuram Godse, who assassinated Gandhi.
Panja further criticized the BJP for undermining India’s historical figures and the legacy of the freedom struggle, labeling the incident as indicative of the party’s political mentality.
In response, Roy defended himself by stating that his remarks had been taken out of context. He insisted that only a small portion of his speech had been shared and emphasized his respect for Gandhi.
The controversy continues to unfold as reactions pour in from various political circles.
