CSK Secures First IPL 2026 Win with Strategic Move
In a crucial match against the Delhi Capitals on Saturday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a bold decision to retire out Ayush Mhatre. This strategic shift aimed to boost their scoring in the final overs and ultimately led to their first victory of the IPL 2026 season.
Match Highlights: CSK vs DC
As the game neared its climax, CSK found themselves at 175 for two in the 18th over. Despite a strong start, the innings hit a snag, with Lungi Ngidi delivering a tight 17th over, followed by T Natarajan, who bowled accurate yorkers that halted the batters from scoring freely.
Mhatre, who had been steady at the crease with a solid 59 runs off 36 balls, was unable to pick up the scoring pace. Recognizing this, CSK made the decision to bring in Shivam Dube—known for his ability to hit big—by retiring Mhatre out.
Post-match, Mhatre shared, “I was batting and the team needed some big shots. Shivam can hit big, and since I wasn’t able to get going, this was the plan. It happens in the game.”
This decision proved fruitful as Dube added the spark CSK needed, allowing them to surpass the 200-mark, finishing their innings at 212 for two.
Earlier, Mhatre played a significant role in stabilizing the innings, forming a partnership of 113 runs with Sanju Samson for the second wicket. This partnership became CSK’s second-highest against the Delhi Capitals in IPL history, providing much-needed support after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s early dismissal.
CSK’s total ultimately proved enough as they bowled out Delhi Capitals for 189, sealing a 23-run victory and marking their first points of the season.
A Family-Like Environment at CSK
Reflecting on his journey with CSK, Mhatre spoke warmly about the team’s supportive atmosphere. “It feels like a family for me. They treat me like a kid, and I really enjoy playing with them,” he said, highlighting the hard work of the support staff.
With his retirement out, Mhatre joins a select few players, including Ravichandran Ashwin and Devon Conway, making him only the second player from CSK to be retired out after scoring a half-century.
With this victory, CSK is looking to build momentum as the IPL season progresses.
