UK Sends Stern Warning to Putin Following Russian Submarine Maneuvers in the North Sea

U.K. Defense Minister Issues Warning to Russia Over North Sea Operations

On Thursday, U.K. Defense Minister John Healey sent a strong message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating there would be “serious consequences” for any attempts to disrupt Britain’s underwater cables and pipelines. This warning came after the U.K. conducted a military operation to counter potential Russian threats in the North Sea.

Healey explained that British forces, including a Royal Navy frigate and a Royal Air Force patrol plane along with hundreds of personnel, were deployed after three Russian submarines were spotted near the U.K.’s economic exclusion zone. Among the submarines was a nuclear-powered Akula-class vessel, and two others were reportedly controlled by Russia’s Main Directorate of Deep Sea Research, referred to as GUGI. Healey indicated that these submarines were directed by Putin to engage in covert military activities against the U.K. and its allies.

Norwegian involvement was part of the operation, with Norway’s Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik affirming their joint efforts to deter unwanted activities in the region. Sandvik stated that their coordinated military operation made it clear that such covert actions will not be tolerated.

After continued surveillance, the Russian submarines left U.K. waters, and Healey confirmed that there was no evidence of any damage to the underwater infrastructure.

This recent incident marks the second detection of Russian vessels near U.K. waters within a six-month period. In November, Healey reported on a similar military operation triggered by the presence of a Russian spy ship in the North Sea.

Healey also touched on recent tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting why the U.K. has not deployed troops there. He emphasized that it is not in Britain’s national interest to send all military resources to that region, identifying Russia as the primary threat to the U.K. and NATO.

Former President Donald Trump criticized NATO for not stepping up to help with the situation in Hormuz, stating that the alliance was absent when needed.

Amid these developments, the U.K. has been reassessing its military operations, including the planning of future steps to ensure maritime safety in vital areas like the Strait of Hormuz, which has faced threats to its accessibility.
