Job Cuts Hit Bay Area Tech Sector Again as GoPro Announces Layoffs
Another wave of layoffs has struck the Bay Area’s tech industry, with GoPro, the action camera maker based in San Mateo, revealing plans to cut 23% of its global workforce. The company stated in a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that around 145 employees will be let go by the second quarter of 2026.
GoPro, which launched its first cameras in the early 2000s, currently has a workforce of about 631 employees. The job cuts are set to wrap up by the end of this year. This decision follows a restructuring plan approved by GoPro’s Board of Directors on April 7, aimed at cutting operational costs and enhancing efficiency.
The restructuring is expected to cost between $11.5 million and $15 million. This includes one-time benefits for the affected employees, like severance pay and healthcare support.
Last November, reports indicated that GoPro’s sales had dropped nearly 37% compared to the previous year. Nonetheless, CEO Nicolas Woodman expressed optimism during a quarterly update, saying, “We have taken significant steps to diversify, grow, and regain profitability.” He highlighted the launch of new products and software that he believes could help the company return to revenue growth by late 2025 or early 2026.
Reactions to the layoffs on platforms like Reddit reflect varied sentiments. One commenter mentioned the challenges of being laid off at this time, while others noted that many companies are making similar cuts, which could ultimately attract investor interest.
In a related note, Oracle, another major tech player in the Bay Area, announced that it would also be letting go of about 700 workers statewide by June. This follows an extensive wave of layoffs from the company, which has recently impacted thousands globally. A mass email informed employees that March 31 would mark their last day, signaling large-scale job cuts across the organization.
As the tech sector continues to navigate challenging times, both GoPro and Oracle’s decisions reflect the broader trend of job reductions sweeping across the industry. GoPro has yet to provide additional comments regarding the layoffs.
