Russian Support for Iran Raises Concerns Amid Middle East Tensions

LONDON/PARIS: Recent assessments from Ukrainian intelligence reveal that Russia has been using its satellites to monitor military sites and key locations across the Middle East, aiding Iran in targeting US forces and other entities. According to this intelligence, reviewed by Reuters, there is emerging evidence of collaboration between Russian and Iranian hackers as well.

The Ukrainian report states that from March 21 to 31, Russian satellites conducted at least 24 thorough surveys of various areas in 11 countries, focusing on 46 specific sites, which included military bases, airports, and oil fields. Notably, shortly after these observations, Iranian forces launched missiles and drone attacks on some of these military installations, indicating a troubling pattern of targeted strikes.

Western military officials, along with regional security experts, have also noted increased satellite activity from Russia in the region, confirming that these imaging findings were shared with Iran. Key among the surveyed areas is Saudi Arabia, where Russian satellites focused on locations like King Khalid Military City to identify elements of the US-made THAAD missile defense system.

Furthermore, Russian satellites have surveyed regions in Turkey, Jordan, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, while strategic sites in Israel, Qatar, Iraq, and Bahrain were monitored as well. The assessment highlights new developments as Russian satellites increasingly monitor the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for global oil and LNG shipping, especially amid Iran’s restrictions on certain vessels.

The specifics of these findings could not be independently verified by Reuters. However, White House spokesperson Olivia Wales stated that no foreign assistance is impacting the operational efficiency of the United States. The Iranian Foreign Ministry did not provide immediate comments, and Russia’s defense ministry also did not respond to inquiries.

A permanent communication channel between Russia and Iran has reportedly facilitated the exchange of satellite data, with Russian military personnel in Tehran potentially playing a role in this collaboration. For instance, the Ukrainian assessment recounted an event where a Russian satellite captured images of Prince Sultan Air Base just days before an Iranian attack on it, which included the targeting of a US E-3 Sentry aircraft.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, military ties between Iran and Russia have strengthened considerably. Ukraine and Western nations claim that Iran has supplied drones to Russia, used in attacks on Ukraine, although Iran denies these claims. Last January, the two nations formalized their partnership through a strategic treaty that emphasizes intelligence sharing to counter mutual threats.

Additionally, the reports highlight that Russian and Iranian hacker groups are now working together more closely. Hacking operations have intensified, mainly targeting critical infrastructure and telecommunications in the Gulf region. Ukrainian intelligence reported interactions between Russian hacker groups, such as the “Z-Pentest Alliance,” and Iran’s “Handala Hack,” which coordinated discussions about potential cyber attacks on Israeli energy firms.

In an alarming collaboration, Iranian hacker groups have employed techniques indicative of Russian military intelligence methods and have even utilized a Russian VPS provider for their activities, showcasing the depth of this emerging alliance.

As conflicts in the region continue to evolve, this undisputed partnership between Iran and Russia raises significant security concerns for the Middle East and beyond.
