Yashasvi Jaiswal Emerges as Strong Orange Cap Contender, Says Ashwin
Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has shown his support for Yashasvi Jaiswal, claiming he could be the top contender for the Orange Cap this IPL season. Ashwin’s comments come after Jaiswal scored a stunning 77 not out off just 32 balls, helping the Rajasthan Royals secure a 27-run victory against the Mumbai Indians in a rain-affected match at Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
Jaiswal’s impressive early-season form has placed him at the top of the run charts, making him one of the most exciting players in the tournament. “Yashasvi Jaiswal has a great chance to win the Orange Cap with an excellent strike rate this time,” Ashwin mentioned on his YouTube channel.
The young left-hander has been in fantastic form, remaining not out in two of his three innings and accumulating 170 runs with a strike rate exceeding 163. His aggressive batting style, paired with promising talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has kept the Rajasthan Royals unbeaten in their three matches so far this season.
Ashwin also noted Shubman Gill as a potential rival for the Orange Cap, but highlighted that Jaiswal has the edge as Gill missed one match.
A Powerful Start in Rain-Affected Match
In the shortened 11-over game against the Mumbai Indians, Jaiswal took charge right from the beginning, playing fearlessly and helping the Royals to 58 runs in just 3.2 overs during the powerplay. He maintained that momentum throughout the innings, leading his team to a solid 150—too much for the Mumbai Indians to chase down.
On the other hand, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has had a quieter start to the season, scoring only 39 runs in his team’s opening loss to the Punjab Kings. The Titans will look to bounce back as they prepare to face the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on April 8.
