Founders Fund, known for investing in groundbreaking companies, has recently backed Halter, a startup from New Zealand. This company is creating solar-powered smart collars for cows, aimed at improving cattle management. Halter’s innovative approach focuses on solving a significant challenge in farming: managing cattle across vast and remote lands without traditional methods like dogs or motorbikes.
In a recent funding round, Halter secured $220 million, reaching a valuation of $2 billion, with Founders Fund taking the lead. While it may not grab the spotlight in tech news, its solution addresses a real issue for farmers worldwide.
Craig Piggott, the 30-year-old founder and CEO of Halter, shared insights about his journey. Having spent nearly a decade developing this technology, he emphasized the importance of managing pasture productivity effectively. “Fencing is crucial as it controls where animals graze,” Piggott explained. “Now, we can do that virtually.”
Halter’s system consists of a solar-powered collar, a network of low-frequency towers, and a smartphone app that enables farmers to set up virtual fences. This comprehensive system helps farmers monitor their cattle in real-time, allowing them to manage herds from the comfort of their homes. Cows learn to respond to audio and vibrations from the collar, similar to how cars beep when they get too close to an obstacle.
The collars serve more than just herding functions. They continuously gather data on animal behavior, health, and reproduction cycles, which has significantly enhanced Halter’s understanding of cattle. As the technology evolves, Piggott noted that customers regularly see new features, improving their farming practices.
With a background growing up on a dairy farm and studying engineering, Piggott’s experiences shaped his vision for Halter. He started the company at just 21, motivated by the potential to blend technology and agriculture. Today, Halter has collars used on over a million cows across more than 2,000 farms in countries like New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. Farmers can expect productivity increases of up to 20% by optimizing grazing patterns.
Other companies, such as Merck with its own virtual fencing product, recognize the potential in this space. However, Piggott remains confident in Halter’s unique approach. He believes that while technologies like drones may play a role in the future, the collar’s effectiveness as a fencing solution is unparalleled.
The complexity of managing such a vast number of animals with high reliability sets Halter apart. Piggott highlighted that any technological failure could lead to significant issues for farmers. Consequently, it took years of hard work to ensure reliability before expanding globally.
Despite current challenges in agricultural technology, Piggott understands the importance of focusing on tangible financial returns for farmers. Halter has prioritized this from the beginning, demonstrating that increased productivity translates directly to better financial results.
With around $400 million raised so far, Halter is eyeing expansion into new markets, including South America and Europe. Impressively, while Halter’s collars are attached to approximately one million cattle, there are still a billion more cows worldwide. This indicates a vast opportunity for growth and innovation in cattle management as Halter continues to develop its product.
