Security Concerns Mount for Jewish Communities During Passover
As Jewish families across the U.S. gather to celebrate Passover, safety concerns are topping the agenda. Rising tensions related to the conflict with Iran, as well as attacks on Jewish individuals and institutions, have put communities on high alert.
From Miami to New York, local officials are reacting to what they describe as an ongoing and changing threat. During a recent security briefing in New York, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch informed Jewish leaders, “We will be on high alert for the foreseeable future.” This statement highlights a growing worry among policymakers and security experts about the gap between the risks faced by Jewish communities and the federal support available to protect them.
Even with these rising fears, funding for places of worship remains below the levels many experts believe are necessary. Antisemitic incidents have been climbing, adding to the sense of urgency.
Increased Patrols Following Attacks
New York City has ramped up police patrols, particularly after a recent attack in Michigan where a gunman drove a truck into Temple Israel while preschool children were present. In California, two Jewish men were assaulted in a restaurant while speaking Hebrew, underscoring growing risks.
Scott Feltman, a security analyst, emphasized that no religious group should have to choose between safety and remaining open to the public. Representative Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., is pushing for an increase in federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program funding to $1 billion for the next fiscal year, a proposal currently under review in Congress.
Growing Security Needs
Scott Feltman addressed the need for immediate action, noting that the current funding structure is insufficient for the threats Jewish communities face. Many organizations receive far less than the maximum grant amount of $200,000 and often experience delays in funding, leaving them exposed to potential risks.
Security measures that are recommended include hiring trained personnel, reinforcing building entry points, and implementing advanced surveillance systems. Experts believe each location might need between $400,000 and $500,000 to be adequately protected, which is nearly double what the federal program currently allows.
Steven Ingber, the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Detroit, has pointed out that much of the responsibility for safety falls on the Jewish community itself, rather than being fully supported by government initiatives.
As the debate on security funding continues, officials urge communal organizations to stay alert and work closely with local law enforcement, especially during times of heightened global tension.
While the federal government manages programs to aid at-risk institutions, gaps remain that need urgent attention as antisemitic acts proliferate.
