Measles Outbreak in Bangladesh: Public Health Alert

Public health officials are raising concerns as measles cases rise globally. In Bangladesh, at least 46 children have died due to the disease, with around 684 confirmed cases reported since late January. Recent laboratory tests revealed that 15 of these deaths were directly linked to measles infection, as stated by Kamruzzaman Chowdhury, Secretary of Health Services Division.

In response to this outbreak, Bangladesh is adjusting its vaccination schedule. Health authorities noted that many cases involved infants younger than 9 months, who cannot yet receive routine vaccinations.

The World Health Organization recommends that children receive two doses of the measles vaccine: one at 9 months and another between 12 to 15 months, especially in regions where measles is prevalent.

As of March 26, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 1,575 confirmed cases of measles in the United States. This year alone, there have been 16 new outbreaks, with 94% of cases being linked to these outbreaks. Experts believe that a decline in community vaccination rates is contributing to this rise in cases, with U.S. vaccination coverage among kindergartners dropping below the critical 95% needed to prevent outbreaks.

Measles is highly contagious, spreading easily when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after the infected individual has left the room. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic rash that typically appears a few days after the initial symptoms.

Public health officials stress the importance of vaccinations to protect against such outbreaks and keep communities safe.
