England Cricket Players Warned After Nightclub Incident in New Zealand
England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook and his teammate Jacob Bethell have received official warnings following an investigation into their behavior during England’s tour of New Zealand last year. This concerns an incident involving a nightclub bouncer in Wellington.
The situation unfolded in October, just before a One Day International match when Brook was involved in a confrontation outside a nightclub. Initially, he claimed to be alone at the time of the incident, but he later admitted he had misrepresented the details to protect his teammates. The Cricket Regulator conducted an investigation and has now announced its findings.
According to a statement from the Cricket Regulator, both Brook and Bethell were issued caution notices for their conduct that night. They clarified that no further actions would be taken against Josh Tongue, who was also present but not part of the ODI squad.
The incident caught significant attention, particularly due to the delayed clarification surrounding it. Following the tour, Brook was fined and given a final warning, with information only surfacing after England’s disappointing Ashes campaign in Australia, where they lost 4-1. During this time, England’s behavior off the field was also under scrutiny, with reports of excessive drinking during a mid-series break.
Brook, who is 27, later expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging that fans had “every right to be annoyed” by his actions.
The confrontation occurred during a night out in Wellington with Brook, Bethell, and Tongue present before the ODI. Following the altercation, Brook was struck while interacting with the bouncer. Although he initially stated he was alone during the episode, he later revealed that there were other teammates with him.
The Cricket Regulator concluded that both Brook and Bethell had violated professional conduct rules, leading to the issuance of caution notices. There was no penalty for Tongue as he had been training with the team but was not part of the ODI lineup at the time.
