Aakash Chopra Questions Shubman Gill’s Captaincy After Gujarat Titans’ Loss
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has raised doubts about Shubman Gill’s leadership skills after the Gujarat Titans lost to the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League match held in Mullanpur on March 31. On his YouTube channel, Chopra criticized the team management and Gill’s choices during the game, particularly focusing on why pacer Prasidh Krishna was brought into the attack so late.
Krishna, who had performed well in the previous IPL season, was called to bowl only in the 13th over during a chase that required quick runs. Chopra pointed out that delaying his introduction might have impacted the team’s chances of winning.
“What happened to Shubman Gill’s captaincy? Prasidh Krishna was available, yet he was not bowling until it was almost too late. When he finally bowled, he got three wickets quickly, making things tense, but what good was that timing?” Chopra remarked.
He also highlighted the team combination issues, questioning the decision to put Krishna on the Impact Player list instead of including him in the starting lineup.
“Why keep him as an impact player? If the team was struggling and needed a substitute, Krishna wouldn’t have been available. It doesn’t make sense,” he added.
Once on the field, Prasidh Krishna had a significant impact, claiming the wicket of PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer with his first ball and later dismissing Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis. This quick series of wickets put Punjab under pressure, as their score dropped from 110/2 to 118/6 in just over three overs.
Chopra also mentioned the limited use of Mohammed Siraj, who still had overs left but wasn’t utilized fully, despite the unfolding situation.
“With Siraj having two overs remaining and Ashok Sharma getting overs instead, it raises questions about Shubman Gill’s captaincy decisions,” Chopra commented. “Why was Krishna held back, and why wasn’t Siraj utilized properly?”
Despite a late surge in wickets, Punjab Kings managed to chase down the 163-run target, leaving Gujarat Titans with a negative Net Run Rate of -0.509 after their away match.
This match has certainly sparked conversations about strategies and leadership choices in the ongoing IPL season.
