Tips for a Happier and Healthier Life

Everyone wants to live a long and joyful life. Behavioral scientist Arthur Brooks, who teaches at Harvard, shares some simple habits that can help us achieve this as we grow older.

In a recent podcast with Dr. Rhonda Patrick, Brooks discussed findings from a long-term Harvard study on adults, highlighting six common habits of happy and healthy people. While the first three habits may seem obvious, the other three are often overlooked.

1. Eat Well

Eating a balanced and nutritious diet is key for both physical and mental health over time.

2. Stay Active

Brooks notes that regular exercise is important, but overdoing it can be harmful. It’s important to find a balance to avoid putting strain on the body.

3. Avoid Smoking and Excessive Drinking

People who are happy and healthy tend to be cautious with substances. Brooks points out that being a lifelong smoker poses a serious risk to health and happiness.

4. Keep Learning

Engaging in lifelong learning contributes to happiness. Brooks emphasizes that curiosity and reading play a big role in staying mentally active and satisfied.

5. Solve Problems Effectively

Brooks suggests that learning to deal with life’s challenges is essential. Being skilled at problem-solving helps us handle difficulties when they arise. Activities like therapy, meditation, or journaling can enhance these skills.

6. Foster Love and Relationships

Strong relationships are vital for a happy life. Brooks states, “Love is what makes people happiest.” Building and maintaining close friendships and a strong marriage are crucial.

By adopting these simple habits, we can increase our overall happiness and well-being as we age.
