KKR’s Big Bet on Cameron Green: Will the Pressure Impact His Game?
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have a mixed history with their big purchases, and this year, they’ve made headlines again by spending a whopping ₹25.2 crore on Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. Although he helped deliver the IPL title last season, recent performances have left some questioning his form. In seven T20 internationals this year, Green has scored just 117 runs and taken two wickets in a mere 7.1 overs.
The significant investment raises the question: will this pressure affect his performance? KKR’s assistant coach, Shane Watson, seems confident that it won’t. Speaking ahead of KKR’s upcoming match against Mumbai Indians (MI), Watson shared his belief that Green won’t let the price tag weigh him down. He pointed out that despite the financial expectations placed on players, many have risen to the occasion in the past.
Watson said, “I’ve seen players crumble under the pressure of a high price tag, but Cameron doesn’t see it that way. When he played for MI a couple of years ago, he had a very successful season even after being bought for a good amount.”
Green’s journey in the IPL has been notable. MI initially purchased him for ₹17.5 crore in 2023 before trading him to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the same amount the following year. Overall, he has scored 707 runs and taken 16 wickets in 29 matches, showcasing his talent despite the pressures that come with high expectations.
Watson emphasized that Green approaches the league with a “nothing to lose” mindset, which could prove beneficial. “That attitude is important in the IPL,” he noted.
KKR is set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against MI this Sunday, March 29. All eyes will be on Cameron Green as he looks to prove his worth in his new colors.
