Zelenskyy: U.S. Security Promises Linked to Donbas Concessions to Russia

Zelenskyy Discusses Potential Peace Deal Tied to Donbas in U.S. Interview

In a recent interview with Reuters, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that U.S. security assurances for Ukraine may depend on Kyiv surrendering the Donbas region to Russia as part of a peace agreement. He expressed concerns that this proposal could weaken Ukraine and affect security in Europe.

Zelenskyy stated, “The Americans are ready to finalize these guarantees at a high level once Ukraine is prepared to withdraw from Donbas.” He warned that such a move could harm Ukraine’s defenses and overall European security.

However, a U.S. official refuted Zelenskyy’s claims, terming them false. The president’s comments reflect increasing pressure from various political leaders, including former President Trump, to quickly resolve the ongoing conflict, now in its fourth year following Russia’s invasion in 2022.

Zelenskyy remarked that the U.S. approach may be swayed by other global issues, like the conflict involving Iran. He noted, “President Trump appears to be opting for a strategy that places more pressure on Ukraine.”

Negotiations involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine have occurred in locations like Abu Dhabi and Geneva, though key topics remain unresolved, such as the future security of Ukraine and the financing of its defense.

The president warned that relinquishing Donbas could give Russia stronghold over Ukraine’s defensive positions, further putting Kyiv at risk. He emphasized that the eastern part of Ukraine is essential to the nation’s security guarantees.

Amidst the ongoing discussions, Zelenskyy acknowledged the aid received from the Trump administration, expressing gratitude for continued deliveries of Patriot missile defense systems, while mentioning that they are still insufficient for Ukraine’s needs.

In addition to diplomatic efforts, Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine’s intent to expand its role as a security provider, especially in the Middle East, where there are rising threats from drone and missile attacks.

He revealed that countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE have reached out to Ukraine for cooperation in defense solutions. Ukrainian teams are already collaborating on strategies to counter mass drone strikes, showcasing the nation’s expertise in this area.

Zelenskyy also indicated that Ukraine is exploring options for defense trade, aiming to sell its surplus systems while seeking missile technology it currently lacks. He stressed the need for more funding to fully realize Ukraine’s defense capability, as the current production rate is operating at half its potential.

During a recent address, he advocated for stronger cooperation with European partners, warning that Europe must build its own capacity for defense systems instead of relying on external suppliers.

Zelenskyy’s remarks highlight the delicate balance of negotiating peace while ensuring the security of Ukraine and Europe as a whole.
