Algeria and Spain to Enhance Energy Partnership
Algeria and Spain are set to strengthen their energy cooperation, especially as Algeria has been Spain’s top gas supplier for the past three years. This announcement came from Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares during his visit to Algeria.
Meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Albares praised Algeria as a “stable and reliable” partner. He emphasized the importance of the MedGaz pipeline, which connects the two countries and is currently operating at full capacity. Experts believe there is potential to increase its capacity by an additional billion cubic meters annually.
Albares pointed out that the discussions highlighted Algeria’s strategic role as a friend and partner to Spain. In response, Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf acknowledged the close ties between the two nations, particularly in the energy sector.
This visit follows a day after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s trip to Algeria, where she expressed intentions to boost Algerian gas deliveries to Italy. During her visit, she announced collaborations between Italian energy company ENI and Algeria’s Sonatrach for projects involving shale gas and offshore exploration.
Additionally, Albares noted a significant rise in Spanish exports to Algeria over the past two years, which have tripled compared to the previous year. The Algerian presidency revealed that President Tebboune also discussed plans to revive a friendship treaty initially established in 2002 with Spain.
