Analyst Cautions: Iran Might Ramp Up US Casualties Through Guerrilla Tactics

US Sends 1,500 Troops from 82nd Airborne to the Middle East

The U.S. military is deploying around 1,500 additional troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East as tensions with Iran escalate. This move, reported by national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin, aims to provide strategic support during the ongoing conflict.

Analyst Michael Eisenstadt from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy has expressed concerns that Iran may increase its military actions if these troops engage in guerrilla-style attacks. He noted that while the 82nd Airborne can provide some military capability, its size makes it vulnerable to Iranian attacks, which could lead to higher casualties for U.S. forces.

Eisenstadt explained that Iran’s military consists of large infantry units comparable to the brigade combat team of the 82nd Airborne. He believes this deployment is meant to pressure Iran into agreeing to a ceasefire and to signal to Tehran that the U.S. is prepared to take action should talks fail.

The deployment includes high-ranking officials, such as Maj. Gen. Brandon R. Tegtmeier, the division commander, along with infantry battalions. Eisenstadt explained that even if conventional operations in the region decrease, new forms of conflict—like hit-and-run strikes—could emerge, similar to the aftermath of the Gulf War in 1991.

This military buildup coincides with ongoing efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has recently restricted access. Eisenstadt highlighted that the deployment intends to create a psychological impact on Iran and support efforts to reopen this vital shipping route.

As this situation develops, the focus remains on how U.S. forces will navigate these challenges and respond to Iranian military actions.
