Tensions Rise as Iran Threatens to Target Israel’s Power Infrastructure
TEL AVIV / OCCUPIED JERUSALEM / WASHINGTON: Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have issued a strong warning, stating they will launch attacks on Israel’s power plants and electricity suppliers for U.S. bases in the Gulf if President Donald Trump follows through on his threats to “obliterate” Iran’s power grid.
In a recent statement, the Revolutionary Guards appeared to step back from previous threats aimed at desalination plants, which are essential for drinking water supply in Gulf nations. They accused the U.S. President of dishonesty, saying, “The lying … U.S. President claimed that we plan to target water plants to harm the people in the region.”
The Guards emphasized their intent to respond proportionately to any threats, asserting, “If you hit electricity, we hit electricity.”
This latest escalation follows Trump’s warning that American forces would destroy Iranian power plants if Tehran does not ensure the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. This maritime route is critical, as it carries a significant portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, and recent tensions have led to a severe oil crisis reminiscent of the 1970s.
Since the conflict escalated on February 28, over 2,000 lives have been lost, with rising fuel prices and inflation exacerbating the situation globally.
Iran’s Response to Oil Blockade
Iran has indicated that it will continue its blockade of oil exports until attacks cease, and Trump has hinted at increasing military actions. The Revolutionary Guards’ threats to target electrical grids raised concerns about potential disruptions to desalination facilities, alarming oil markets as trading opened with fluctuating prices.
Despite intense bombardments reportedly diminishing Iran’s missile capabilities, attacks on Israel continued. Air raid alerts were triggered in various parts of Israel, including Tel Aviv, announcing incoming Iranian missiles. The Israeli military responded with strikes on Iranian infrastructure.
Reports have emerged that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been injured and remains out of public view since taking office after his predecessor’s death in military actions.
Recent attacks have led to casualties, including the deaths of six individuals and injuries to dozens in Iran. Videos circulated on social media showed extensive damage to residential areas in Tehran.
Potential Catastrophic Consequences
Trump’s threats to target Iran’s power infrastructure could have dire consequences, not only for Iran but also for its Gulf neighbors, where electricity is crucial for daily life. The Gulf states rely heavily on electricity for their modern infrastructures, including desalination plants that provide almost all of Bahrain and Qatar’s drinking water.
The Revolutionary Guards also stated that if their power plants are attacked, they would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until they are repaired. This assertion adds to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding shipping routes, with reports confirming limited vessel access.
Continued Conflict on Multiple Fronts
As hostilities persist, fighting also continues between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, with Israeli forces conducting operations against the militant group. Both sides have suffered casualties, and expectations remain high for further confrontations in the coming weeks.
Hezbollah has aggressively targeted border areas in northern Israel, and the conflict has resulted in significant loss of life across the region, raising concerns about the broader implications for peace and stability.
