Concern for Indians in Iran Amid West Asia Conflict

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reported that around 9,000 Indians remain in Iran during a recent parliamentary meeting focused on the safety and repatriation of the Indian community in the region affected by ongoing conflict.

According to Tharoor, although many Indians are still in Iran, not all of them wish to leave. He noted that travel within the Gulf states has become easier, with commercial flights operating from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, although services are limited in Qatar and Bahrain. He emphasized that people are not stranded, but there are still some challenges.

Tharoor also raised concerns about Indian children in the Gulf who are unable to sit for their CBSE board exams due to cancellations. He mentioned that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is in discussions with the Ministry of Education to find solutions for about 23,000 affected students.

When asked about ships carrying petroleum stuck in the area, Tharoor indicated that while he didn’t have an exact number, he confirmed that several ships are still facing difficulties.

He stated that the meeting addressed various concerns regarding the safety of Indian nationals, the well-being of the diaspora, and the implications for oil and gas supplies. While some answers were provided, he noted that not all issues could be fully addressed, especially with the foreign secretary unavailable.

Overall, the discussions focused on ensuring the safety and security of Indians abroad and finding ways to support those impacted by the ongoing situation in West Asia.
