Spain Withdraws Ambassador from Israel Amid Rising Tensions
Spain has announced the permanent withdrawal of its ambassador to Israel, escalating an already strained diplomatic relationship. This decision follows Spain’s criticism of recent U.S.-Israeli military actions against Iran.
The Spanish government made the official announcement on Tuesday, stating that its ambassador’s position has been terminated and that the embassy in Tel Aviv will now be managed by a chargé d’affaires indefinitely. This move comes after Spain had previously recalled its ambassador last September due to Israel’s condemnation of Spain’s restrictions on military shipments bound for Israel.
In response to a question, President Donald Trump remarked that Spain is not cooperating well with the U.S. He expressed dissatisfaction with Spain’s contributions to NATO, noting that while the Spanish people are wonderful, their leaders are not meeting expectations.
Senator Lindsey Graham also criticized Spain’s decision, emphasizing that as a NATO member, Spain should support the joint efforts of the U.S. and Israel against Iran, which he described as a significant threat to peace.
The rift between Spain and Israel has deepened since Israel’s military response to the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Relations worsened further when Spain recognized a Palestinian state, leading Israel to reduce its diplomatic presence in Madrid.
As tensions continue to rise, both countries are left navigating a complex political landscape.
