MIPS and Green Hills Software Team Up for Safety Software Development Kit

MIPS, part of GlobalFoundries, has joined forces with Green Hills Software, a leading company in safety and security for embedded systems, to create a new Safety Software Development Kit (SDK). This collaboration aims to speed up the certification processes and get advanced automotive and industrial systems to market faster, particularly those that meet ASIL-D and SIL 3/4 safety standards.

Drew Barbier, VP of the IP Business Unit at MIPS, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “By merging MIPS’ high-performance M8500 architecture with Green Hills’ renowned safety-certified tools and real-time operating system (RTOS), we’re opening the door to innovative Physical AI platforms that require real-time, safety-focused computing for automotive and industrial uses.”

When combined with Green Hills’ certified tools and RTOS, customers can streamline their development processes, allowing for quicker verification necessary for applications like real-time motor control and power management. The µ-velOSity RTOS, along with advanced debugging tools and certified C/C++ compilers, supports these developments, paving the way for earlier and more efficient testing.

Dan Mender, VP of Business Development at Green Hills Software, highlighted the value of this collaboration: “Our work with MIPS will offer customers a complete, certifiable development path, empowering teams to create safe and reliable software confidently.”

The MIPS M8500 processor is designed for safety-critical scenarios such as electric vehicles, motor control, power management, and industrial robotics. This platform, which includes multiple lock-stepped M8500 cores, meets the demands for stringent safety applications.

The focus of this partnership is to develop a Safety SDK that combines MIPS’ specialized M8500 processor with the effective Green Hills MULTI toolchain, optimizing compilers, the DoubleCheck static analyzer, and the µ-velOSity RTOS. Together, these elements provide a comprehensive path to safety-certified production.

MIPS and Green Hills are currently gathering feedback from early access customers to enhance the Safety SDK. The upcoming toolkit will feature evaluation platforms, motor control demos, and development tools tailored for qualified users.
