IND vs WI | T20 World Cup: Dinesh Karthik suggests a game-changing move for Jasprit Bumrah against the West Indies

Karthik Advocates for Bumrah as New Ball Bowler in Key Match Against West Indies

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik is urging a change in strategy for India’s crucial Super 8 match against the West Indies. He believes that Jasprit Bumrah should take the new ball when the game kicks off in Kolkata.

With India facing what is essentially a knockout match, Karthik points out that the West Indies have a reputation for powerful hitters. He feels that by allowing Bumrah to bowl upfront, India could make early breakthroughs and disrupt the West Indies’ aggressive style.

In a chat with ESPNCricinfo, Karthik noted that although India performed well against Zimbabwe, they might have won by an even larger margin if Bumrah had started with the new ball. He explained, “Bumrah knows how to swing the ball both in and out. But when he came in around the fifth or sixth over, he couldn’t make the same impact because those overs are tough for swing.”

Bumrah’s Performance So Far

In the match against Zimbabwe, Bumrah bowled three overs, conceding 21 runs but did not open the bowling as Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya did instead. This meant Bumrah had fewer chances to utilize the early movement the new ball offers, and he ended up bowling just one over during the powerplay.

In contrast, during the previous game against South Africa, Bumrah bowled the second and fourth overs and took two wickets early on while giving away only seven runs in that crucial phase. He finished with impressive figures of 3 for 15, highlighting his ability to perform under pressure.

Why Bumrah as New Ball Bowler Matters

While the West Indies have struggled against South Africa recently, their batting lineup remains dangerous. Talented players like Shimron Hetmyer and Romario Shepherd can quickly change the game if they find their rhythm.

Karthik’s suggestion aims to prevent them from settling in. Bumrah’s skill to swing the new ball gives India a strong advantage for striking early, especially in high-stakes matches where control during the powerplay can influence the outcome.

With a spot in the semi-finals at stake, giving Bumrah the new ball could be a key strategic decision that might change the match dynamics in India’s favor.
