In a gripping courtroom saga, the battle over a massive Rs 30,000 crore inheritance tied to the estate of the late tycoon Sunjay Kapur has taken an intense turn. Recently, a Delhi court ordered a forensic analysis and handwriting examination of a disputed Will that could ultimately determine control over a vast corporate empire.
Gagan Deep Jindal, a Joint Registrar at the Delhi High Court, authorized an independent scientific investigation of the contested document. This decision aligns with ongoing efforts by Samaira and Kiaan Kapur, Sunjay’s children from his marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor. Since November 2025, they have sought expert analysis, arguing that only forensic testing can clarify the circumstances surrounding the Will’s creation and whether it genuinely reflects their father’s final wishes.
The court also dismissed a request from Priya and her son Azarius for an extension, citing their failure to respond in a timely manner and hinting at a deliberate delay in the legal process.
This ruling, announced on February 28, could be a setback for Priya Kapur, who, along with her six-year-old son, has been the only one opposing the forensic examination. The Will’s executor, as well as Sunjay’s mother, did not object to this analysis—a point that was noted during the proceedings.
Priya asserts that she was present when the Will was prepared and signed, claiming she handed it to the executor at their family home. She also maintains that she is the sole beneficiary of her late husband’s business interests, which include significant shares in the auto components firm Sona Comstar. Following Sunjay’s death, she quickly moved to take control of key entities within Sona Group.
In spite of being the document’s main proponent, Priya has resisted the forensic examination. Her lawyer argued that the Will was submitted under seal and should not be subjected to outside experts, claiming the Registrar lacked the authority to mandate this scrutiny.
However, these arguments were dismissed. Counsel for Samaira referred to legal provisions allowing such forensic analyses and argued that confidentiality doesn’t exempt a Will from scrutiny. The inspection will now take place under the court’s supervision in the High Court premises.
In high-stakes probate disputes like this, forensic analysis of handwriting, ink, and paper is routine. Additional hearings regarding the preservation of call detail records and the production of mobile devices belonging to Sunjay and Priya are scheduled for March 10. For Samaira and Kiaan, this order is a significant victory. For Priya, it highlights a key conflict: by attempting to block independent verification, she has raised questions that the forthcoming forensic process will need to address.
