New Legislation on Aircraft Tracking Technology Set for 2031

A new bill, S. 2503, is pushing for civilian and military aircraft to adopt location-tracking technology by December 31, 2031. This technology, known as Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) In, helps pilots receive important traffic and weather information from nearby aircraft.

ADS-B Out is the counterpart of this system, which broadcasts an aircraft’s location, altitude, and speed to both other planes and air traffic control. As part of this legislation, there will be fewer exemptions for military flights regarding the use of ADS-B Out technology.

Additionally, the bill includes a requirement for a safety review of airports across the United States, beginning with Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. This initiative underscores the importance of enhancing safety in the aviation sector as we move toward a more connected future.
