Olympics Showdown: Paris vs. Milan-Cortina Ceremonies

The opening ceremonies of the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris and Milan-Cortina are set to present two very different styles, reflecting the unique cultural and political atmospheres of France and Italy.

Paris aims to showcase a modern narrative filled with diversity and innovation, while Milan is expected to celebrate its rich heritage and national pride. Hugh Dugan, an Olympic Truce advocate, described the Paris ceremony as “visually bold but polarizing,” blending traditional elements with modern themes, which might spark debate over its intentions and messages.

Controversy arose when a segment of the Paris ceremony, likened to Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper,” faced backlash from religious groups and conservative commentators. This incident has ignited wider discussions in France about identity, religion, and public symbols, drawing attention to the ongoing cultural debates in the country.

In contrast, the Milan-Cortina Winter Games, scheduled for February 2026, will likely focus on themes of unity and tradition, emphasizing Italy’s cultural heritage without diving deeply into ideological narratives. Dugan praised this approach, noting that it highlights the essence of the Olympic spirit—connection and peace—through a celebration of Italy’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

Research fellow Emma Schubart highlighted the divide between the two nations, stating that President Emmanuel Macron’s France leans toward progressive ideas, while Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Italy embraces more traditional values, showcasing a widening cultural chasm in Europe.

The distinct styles of the ceremonies represent differing philosophies about the role of the Olympics, with Paris leaning into modernity and Milan honoring age-old traditions. This contrast underlines how host countries increasingly utilize Olympic ceremonies to express their national identities and values.

As we look forward to these significant events, it’s clear that the ceremonies will not just celebrate sports but will also reflect the ongoing cultural narratives of their respective nations.
