Sri Lanka’s Triumph Over Australia Marks a Highlight for Shanaka and His Team

Sri Lanka Triumphs Over Australia in T20 World Cup

Sri Lanka’s captain, Dasun Shanaka, couldn’t hide his excitement after the team’s recent victory over Australia in the T20 World Cup 2026. The co-hosts secured a spot in the Super 8s with an impressive eight-wicket win, leaving Australia facing an uncertain fate in the tournament.

In a post-match interview, Shanaka highlighted this match as one of Sri Lanka’s finest moments lately. Opener Pathum Nissanka stole the show by scoring a brilliant century—the first of this World Cup—leading his team to victory with 12 balls to spare.

After a shaky start, where the Australians scored 100 runs in the first eight overs, Sri Lanka’s spinners took over, successfully limiting Australia to a total of 181 runs, which proved challenging on a difficult pitch.

Unfortunately, Sri Lanka faced a setback early on when fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana suffered a hamstring injury and left the field after just four deliveries. Despite this, the team remained optimistic. Their spinners effectively controlled the Australian batters during the crucial final overs.

“This was one of our best performances in a while. I’m pleased with how we handled the first innings. Even after losing Pathirana, we stayed positive and confident. Everyone was eager to contribute,” Shanaka remarked after the match.

Chasing down 182 runs, Nissanka delivered a remarkable performance, reaching his hundred in just 52 balls. Kusal Mendis supported him well, scoring 51 runs and forming a solid partnership of 97 runs with Nissanka after Kusal Perera was dismissed in the second over.

Once Mendis was out, Nissanka continued his assault, hitting 10 fours and five sixes. Youngster Pavan Rathnayake also made an impact, scoring a quick 28 runs off 15 balls.

“Nissanka’s innings was much needed. It feels fantastic to qualify for the Super 8s after so many years. Hopefully, we can make it to the semifinals too. A big thank you to the crowd for their support,” Shanaka added.

Australia’s defeat puts them on the brink of elimination. Although captain Mitchell Marsh and opener Travis Head started strong, their innings fell apart under Sri Lanka’s spin bowlers, leaving them about 20 runs short of a competitive total.

Now, Australia will be watching the upcoming match between Zimbabwe and Ireland closely. If Zimbabwe wins, it will spell trouble for Australia, potentially leading to their exit from the tournament.

Conclusion

As the T20 World Cup progresses, the excitement builds, with Sri Lanka celebrating a huge win and Australia facing tough challenges ahead.
