New York Mayor Appoints Lisa Gelobter as Chief Technology Officer
On Tuesday, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the appointment of Lisa Gelobter as the city’s new chief technology officer and commissioner of the Office of Technology and Innovation. Gelobter has an impressive background, having served as the chief digital service officer for the Department of Education during President Obama’s second term.
In her new role, Gelobter will be responsible for overseeing the city’s technology infrastructure, cybersecurity initiatives, and data management projects. Her hiring fills a position that became vacant after Matt Fraser resigned at the end of former Mayor Eric Adams’ administration. This move highlights the Mamdani administration’s commitment to focusing on digital equity and enhancing public services for all New Yorkers.
Mamdani praised Gelobter for her extensive experience as a computer scientist and entrepreneur, noting her dedication to using technology for the greater good. Most recently, Gelobter founded tEQuitable, a tech startup aimed at helping organizations tackle workplace culture challenges, including harassment and bias, to create fairer environments.
During her tenure at the Department of Education, Gelobter concentrated on improving access to government services, especially for vulnerable populations. She also held the position of interim chief digital officer at Black Entertainment Television Networks for five years.
Her accolades include being named one of the “most creative people” by Fast Company in 2016, and in 2019, she was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of 100 women making strides in innovative business.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Gelobter said she feels “deeply honored” to be appointed at such a pivotal time when technology plays a crucial role in civic life. She emphasized the importance of using technology to enhance public service delivery, improve accountability, and ensure innovation meets the needs of all residents.
