New Approach to U.N. Policy Under Ambassador Mike Waltz
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, recently shared insights on the “America First” policies of the Trump administration in an exclusive interview. He emphasized the need for reforms within the U.N., pushing back against the notion that the current financial issues stem mainly from unpaid U.S. contributions.
Waltz highlighted that the U.S. invests more in the U.N. than 180 other countries combined. He stated, “Historically, we have been the biggest supporter of the U.N., but now we’re insisting on change.” He believes that the organization has strayed from its original mission and needs to be more accountable.
He pointed out instances where the U.N. has worked against U.S. interests, claiming it has become oversized and inefficient. Waltz emphasized that U.S. taxpayer dollars should be used more effectively, saying, “When we give the U.N. some tough love, it’s to ensure we get our money’s worth.”
During his remarks, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres identified unpaid dues by members as a crucial issue. However, Waltz argued that the U.N. has been making strides towards reform. He praised recent efforts to cut bureaucratic positions and the first budget reduction in 80 years, as well as a reduction in global peacekeeping forces.
Waltz expressed a desire for a U.N. that focuses more on security and conflict resolution. He criticized the historical approach of simply asking for more aid without ensuring sustainability. “We need to foster environments that welcome American businesses in developing countries,” he said.
Looking ahead, Waltz aims to create a more efficient and mission-focused U.N., where nations collaborate effectively to resolve global issues. He envisions a day when the U.N. will ask for U.S. assistance rather than the other way around.
Waltz concluded by stating, “My goal is for the U.N. to effectively guide countries towards resolving conflicts and achieving peace.”
