Ukraine and Russia Aim for Peace Ahead of U.S. Deadline
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that the United States is pushing for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia by June, which would bring an end to the ongoing war that has lasted nearly four years. During a press conference, Zelenskyy indicated that the U.S. plans to encourage both sides to finalize the deal by early summer.
“The Americans are urging both parties to wrap up the war by June, and they seem committed to following through on this timeline,” he claimed. Zelenskyy also mentioned that failure to meet this deadline could lead to increased pressure from the U.S. on both Moscow and Kyiv.
In the midst of these negotiations, Ukraine continues to face significant challenges. Just a day before the resumption of peace talks in Abu Dhabi, Russia launched a heavy missile barrage, targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy reported that the latest assault involved hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, hitting various sites including residential buildings in Kyiv.
Despite these attacks, Zelenskyy is optimistic about the upcoming trilateral talks in the U.S., which are expected to take place next week. He has signaled Ukraine’s readiness to engage in these discussions, aimed at creating lasting peace.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials recently announced a prisoner swap agreement, with both Russia and Ukraine set to release 157 detained soldiers, marking the first such exchange in five months. Additionally, a new military communication channel is being established to assist in maintaining dialogue and potentially easing tensions.
Zelenskyy has called for international support to help Ukraine endure the difficult winter ahead, emphasizing that every bit of military aid could make a significant difference. “We need more missiles for our defense systems. Every contribution helps us facing this harsh winter,” he stated.
Overall, while there are hopeful signs of progress in negotiations, the war is far from over, and Ukraine continues to call for increased support from its allies.
